Malcolm Richards – Founder & Director

My name is Malcolm Richards and I founded the Road School in 2009.

I have worked for many years as a teacher, senior leader in schools, pupil referral units, education projects in London, Buckinghamshire and Devon, and as an advisory teacher for a South West of England local authority.

Since 2019, I have conducted doctoral research at the University of Exeter. My research considers the work and context of The Road School, by exploring how education professionals mediate ‘funds of knowledge’ with ‘’Black Caribbean’ British communities as resources for ‘dialogic education’ in largely monocultural schools in England.

My wider areas of research interest are:

  • Race, anti-racism and social justice in education.
  • Dialogic education and critical pedagogy;
  • Culturally sustaining pedagogies and funds of knowledge for education;
  • Inter-cultural and global dialogue in education;

Academic and education networks

  • Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain (PESGB)
  • Race and Equality in Education Network (REEN) – University of Exeter
  • Black Members Officers for Devon – National Education Union (NEU)
